Do you know the best order you should be using when updating WordPress?

Your WordPress quick tip for today. . .

You might think, like most people do, that you do WordPress updates in the order they are on the Updates page but that’s not actually true! For a long time, I didn’t know there was a proper order, either. I just started at the top of the Updates list and worked my way down: WP core, plugins, then themes. Seems logical, right?

But did you know there’s actually a recommended order? It’s ok if not – most people don’t. And it’s NOT from the top of the Updates page to the bottom.

The recommended order is actually as follows:

  1. Update all themes
  2. Update all plugins
  3. Update WP core

And of course, BEFORE you start ANY updates, make a backup of your site.

AND if your host offers a plan that includes a staging site, spring for it! You won’t regret it! Staging sites make it so much easier to do updates and redesigns (and trust me, your designer/developer will love you for it).

Do all updates on your staging site and then if all is well, push them to the live site.

Whether you have a staging site or not, now you know the recommended order for processing updates. Good luck and happy updating!
